Dr. Mercedes Aguerrebere
Dr. Mercedes Aguerrebere is a psychiatrist and graduate of Harvard Medical School’s Master of Medical Sciences in Global Health Delivery, where she studied as a Fulbright Scholar. She has more than a decade of experience in global health and mental health, working at the intersection of program design and implementation, research, teaching, and direct care for underserved populations in both rural and urban settings.
Mercedes currently serves as a Consultant Psychiatrist with Compañeros En Salud, Partners In Health’s sister organization in Mexico, and with the PIH Cross-Site Mental Health team. Since 2022, she has also provided trauma-informed remote care for survivors of violence at Mexico’s northern border through the Alianza para la Salud de las y los Refugiados.
In addition to her clinical work, Mercedes has taught courses on mental health, social medicine, and global health to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students in Mexico, and psychiatry to medical students at the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda. Her research interests focus on applying mixed methods to strengthen the implementation and delivery of quality mental health services with the objective if improving access to mental health care for underserved populations.
As part of the EMPOWER team, Mercedes contributes her clinical, research, and implementation expertise to the development and delivery of digital training for non-specialists, helping expand access to quality mental health services in the United States. Her work with EMPOWER focuses on single-session interventions for peritraumatic stress, and expanding access to non-pharmacologic treatment for depression in Texas.
